Our History
Our story begins in 1946, when Clare Gwilt, a dedicated house painter with a discerning eye for quality, decided to take matters into his own hands. Dissatisfied with the service and products available in Dowagiac, MI, Clare opened his own paint store, determined to provide his community with the best Benjamin Moore paint—a brand we proudly continue to offer today.
Clare’s vision didn’t stop at just selling paint; he passed on his passion to his son-in-law, Larry, who had just returned from serving four years in the South Pacific during WWII. With the same determination that his father-in-law had shown, Larry opened his first store, Albion Paint Spot, in Albion, Michigan, in 1954. His commitment to excellence led to the opening of a second store in Battle Creek in 1963.
In 1994, Larry and his son Andy took the next step in their family’s journey, opening Larry’s Floor Covering & Paint. This new venture brought together their expertise in both paint and flooring, offering a comprehensive service that has become a cornerstone in Marshall, MI. Now owned and operated by Andy Merrild, the business continues to thrive, upholding the high standards set by Clare and Larry.

Andy Merrild is the proud owner of Larry’s Floor Covering & Paint and the third generation to lead the business.
Born in Albion, MI, Andy moved with his family to Marshall in 1998. Since then, he has been deeply connected to the community, not only through his dedication to the family business but also by running a bed and breakfast called The Way Inn from his historic home. This venture further solidified his ties to the local area, showcasing his commitment to providing personalized service and fostering a sense of community.
With a passion for quality craftsmanship and personalized service, Andy ensures that every customer receives the best products and expert guidance, no matter the project size. Under his leadership, Larry’s Floor Covering & Paint continues to thrive as a trusted local business, known for its dedication to helping homeowners create beautiful, functional spaces.
